No data yet
Setup finished and nothing has arrived. Almost always the board is fine and something between it and us is not, so start with the network — not with reinstalling the firmware.
Three different things happened, or did not
| Fact | How you know |
|---|---|
| The board accepted the setup | Setup says so. It is the board answering over the cable, nothing more. |
| A message was received and stored | The device page shows it. This is the one that means it is working. |
| A decoder read it | The message shows named values instead of raw bytes. |
Accepting the setup is not evidence of the other two. It says the board stored what it was sent; whether it can then reach the network is a separate question, and this page is about the gap between the first row and the second.
Work through these in order
- 1Give it a minute. Most demos report about every thirty seconds, and a board reboots and joins its network first. Ten quiet seconds mean nothing.
- 2Check the network you named. An ESP32 radio cannot see 5 GHz networks. A typo in the password looks exactly like a dead board from here, and so does a network that needs a captive-portal login.
- 3Check what makes this demo send. Some demos report on a timer. Some send when something happens. Some have no radio at all and need a relay running on your computer — see Prepare your demo board. The demo's own README, in the download on its setup card, says which.
- 4Watch the board say it. Open the serial monitor on the setup page and read what the board prints. A board that is joining, failing and retrying says so out loud.
- 5Check the device page for refusals. A device sending with a credential we do not recognise is turned away, and a refused message is never stored — so it looks identical to silence. The device page counts refusals and shows when the last one was.
Retry the step, not the whole thing
If setup stopped part-way it says which step stopped and what that left on the board. Pressing the button again resumes from there: it does not re-fetch, re-mint or re-write anything that already succeeded.
- Setup was not confirmed. Retry sends it again. Sending the same settings twice to a board that already has them changes nothing.
- The board disconnected. Reconnect it. Setup reads the board again before it writes anything, because the board on the cable may not be the same one.
- Nothing arrived. That is not a step that failed. Reinstalling replaces firmware that is probably working, and erases the settings you just gave it.
The page keeps watching for ten minutes and then pauses. The board keeps trying either way — it does not know the page is there. Check again restarts the watch, and the device appears on your Devices page whenever it gets through.
It arrived, but it is raw
That is a different situation and a good one: the hardware, the network and the credential all work, and only the reading is missing. See Specs, decoders and raw data.
